American Cancer Society Programs
The American Cancer Society and Littleton Regional Hospital Present the I Can Cope Program
The American Cancer Society and Littleton Regional Hospital invite Cancer patients, their families, and caregivers to attend a series of free educational programs for people facing cancer called I Can Cope. The educational classes will be held on the second Wednesday of each month at 2:00 p.m. at the Littleton Regional Hospital, H. Taylor Caswell, Jr. Physicians Office Building Conference Center, Conference Room III.
Topics to be covered in the I Can Cope classes include an overview of Cancer treatment and side effects, the role of nutrition in healing, gentle exercise and fitness, communication challenges and relationships, support systems, spirituality, self-esteem, and survivor testimony. Guest speakers for the program are health care providers and other local experts.
The I Can Cope program was developed by the American Cancer Society to help cancer patients and their families and caregivers deal with one of the greatest challenges life presents. I Can Cope offers reliable information, peer support, and practical coping skills to meet this challenge. The more that people know about what is happening during cancer diagnosis and treatment, the better equipped they will be to handle each step of the journey. I Can Cope is frequently offered in collaboration with local hospitals and healthcare organizations such as Littleton Regional Hospital.
For additional information regarding the I Can Cope series, please contact Donna Killeen, Medical Social Worker, at 603-444-9097.
The American Cancer Society and Littleton Regional Hospital Present the Look Good Feel Better Program
Look Good...Feel Better is a free, community-based program that teaches beauty techniques to female cancer patients currently in chemotherapy or radiation treatment to help restore their appearance and self-image.
Look Good...Feel Better is a partnership between the American Cancer Society; the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association Foundation; and the National Cosmetology Association. Certified and licensed beauty professionals provide tips on a variety of issues that cancer patients face including:
§ Makeup
§ Skin care
§ Nail care
§ Head coverings
Volunteer beauty professionals lead small groups, usually consisting of six to ten women, through a practical, hands-on session. Women learn about makeup techniques, skin care, nail care and options related to hair loss such as wigs, turbans, and scarves. Each group program participant receives a free kit of cosmetics for use during and after the workshop. The cosmetics are provided as tools to learn the techniques demonstrated during the workshops and are not customized for each participant.
Self-help materials can be obtained free of charge by request through the Look Good...Feel Better toll-free number, 1.800.395.LOOK. These materials include a 30-minute video entitled "Look Good...Feel Better Just for You," a step-by-step instructional booklet and an evaluation form. The videotape features cancer survivors and volunteers discussing appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment, as well as detailed skincare information, "how to" makeup tips, wig information and pointers on head coverings. The companion booklet also covers nail care. Materials are also offered in Spanish.
Please visit the American Cancer Society website at www.cancer.org for dates and locations.
