Consumer Product Safety Program
Link to web-site: www.cpsc.gov
Littleton Regional Hospital was chosen as one of two New Hampshire Hospitals and one of 100 Hospital Nationwide to participate in the United States Consumer Product Safety Program.
Through the National Electronic Surveillance System, the Hospital reports consumer product related, emergency room treated injuries to the Safety Commission. Littleton Regional Hospital staff records information about how an injury occurred in the patient’s medical record. The central computer polls the Littleton Regional Hospital computer and updates the central database daily. Based on the information provided by Littleton Regional Hospital and other participating hospitals, the Consumer Product Safety Commission will secure greater detail on the injury from LRH, follow up on the injury by way of a telephone interview and perform an on-site investigation.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission helps consumers evaluate the comparative safety of products found in and about the home and everyday life. The Commission seeks to protect consumers against unreasonable risk of personal injury and deaths associated with consumer products. The goals of the Commission are to establish a mandatory safety standard, ban hazardous products, and establish voluntary industry corrections as well as establishing safety alerts and information.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has jurisdiction over about 15,000 types of consumer products, from automatic drip coffee makers to toys and lawn mowers.
As a participating Hospital, LRH receives warning and recall notices regarding unsafe products directly from Washington. Recalls and warning information are available through the Gale Medical Library at Littleton Regional Hospital.
