New Director of Hospitalist Program at LRH
November 10, 2009
Littleton Regional Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Stephen Goldberg, MD and new Program Director of the Hospitalist Program at LRH. Prior to joining LRH, Dr. Goldberg served as the Hospitalist at the Carteret Hospital in Morehead, NC.
Hospitalists are physicians whose primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. The term "hospitalist" refers to physicians whose practice emphasizes providing care for hospitalized patients. This term was coined by Drs. Robert Wachter and Lee Goldman in a New England Journal of Medicine article in August of 1996 (Wachter RM, Goldman L. The emerging role of "hospitalists" in the American health care system. N Engl J Med 1996;335:514-7). While some doctors have emphasized inpatient care for many years, there has been a significant growth of such doctors since 1994.
There are more new jobs available for hospitalists than in any aspect of internal medicine. Hospital medicine is a significant career path option for those trained in general internal medicine, general pediatrics, family practice, and obstetrics.
Dr. Goldberg completed his undergraduate studies at the Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv, Israel. He completed his internship and residency at Beth Israel Medical Center, New York, NY. Dr. Goldberg is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
