Delivering at LRH

The staff at LRH recongnize that the labor and birth of a child is an exciting, life-changing event. At the Agnes Norris Birthing Center, we invite moms to give birth to their babies in a way that works best for them and their family.

Our private birthing rooms with tubs and showers provide a comfortable environment for labor, delivery and postpartum care. Dim lighting is also available to help create a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere. Moms are welcome to bring their own clothes and music and any other items that will assist them in their labor and delivery.

Moms decide who they want present during their labor and delivery and can share this information with their nurse upon admission.

The Birthing Center offers a variety of comfort techniques for labor and birth, including:

Relaxation and breathing
Shower or bath
Massage and/or pressure
Walking and postion changes
Birthing ball, rolling pin, warm packs
Medications
Epidurals

We DO NOT routinely restrict visitors, keep babies in the nursery, insert IV's or perform enemas and shaving.

Your birth partner may choose to cut umbilical cord and/or give the baby's first bath. The birth partner is also welcome to stay with the mom during her entire stay and is encouraged to bring his or her own food for nourishment during the hospital stay.

We encourage direct contact between mother and baby for comfort, temperature control and bonding immediatley after birth. Moms choosing to breast feed may do so during this time. The baby is usually weighed and bathed within 60 to 90 minutes after birth.

In the event of a Cesarean birth, mom will be able to have her birth partner present during the delivery. New moms will be able to briefly hold their baby at this time and bond more closely and breastfeed upon return to the room.
